Crossroads – Plain Speaking ~ Part 2

I can absolutely guarantee you, the reader, of one thing at the very outset of this commentary, there will be many who will begin to read this and who will choke on the first thing they come to that they don’t agree with. They will NOT bother to read any further, they will not bother to attempt to understand, much less comprehend, what the message of this writing is all about because such a thing will, at that point, be entirely beyond their scope of consideration. No, instead they will take to their keyboards and they will post their “expert” opinion of this message as if they were coming down THE mountain with THE stone tablets. They will, therefore, embarrass themselves and the rest of us. They will reveal the true depth of their arrogance and will not practice a “Suspension of disbelief”, instead they will judge, by their own prejudices and demonstrate their own narrow minded, and simple minded, view and suffer the rest of those reading the whole thing to be swayed by their incompetence.

On the other hand there will be those who will be mindful that EVERYONE is entitled to make their observances and their opinions available for consideration. These are the people who hold the real power, the people who avoid being judgmental.

Guess who I dedicate this piece to?
To the others, read it… I dare you… but remember one thing,

“By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.”

Our society, the society of modern living vampires that is, has become extensively diluted since its earliest forms, there is no longer any shadow of doubt remaining about that fact. The wide array of beliefs and interpretations of the “modern living vampire” cause the most trouble because there are, now, so many different interpretations of the theme. Modern living vampires, in numbers, are unable to agree upon what exactly a modern living vampire is, in any succinct and meaningful way, and so we continue to watch, we continue; hopefully, to pursue the meaning of our life as living vampires and we continue to struggle to make some sense out of the tangled and confused mess we have gotten ourselves into.

Estimates as to the number of Real Living Vampires involved in the sub-culture today range quite dramatically, depending on the source. I have read estimates of 1800 to 2000; I prefer the estimated figure of 2000 to 5000 worldwide while there are still others who insist we are talking about somewhere in the vicinity of 10,000 to 20,000 globally. The fact remains that there is insufficient data to support either one of these estimates that are based upon the observers preferred definition of “vampire”. There is still no scientific evidence to prove, or disprove, the actual reality of the situation and thus each person involved in the sub-culture must make his or her own determination, based on their personal belief. As far as it goes that is not a problem, just as each person is free to believe in a particular God, free to believe in the existence of extra-terrestrial intelligent life, free to believe in the constitution of whatever country they live in, or not. The problem becomes that when we seek to pass judgement on others based on our beliefs we become guilty of irrational prejudice.
Looking at the overall picture of the modern real living vampire sub-culture we are constantly hearing terms such as “poser”, “lifestyler”, “wannabe”, “role-player” and “Neovampire”[1] which are adopted in order that we can, in a “easy-out” fashion, label things that we don’t want to have to be bothered thinking about. Aren’t we, in fact, being guilty of the very same prejudices that we decry when people call “modern living vampires” crazy, unstable, lunatics and sicko’s?

One of my personal favourites is “Demonkin”… let’s look, through sensible eyes, at the validity of that claim. “Demon” and “Kin” ~

Demon, Noun
1. An evil spirit or devil, especially one thought to possess a person or act as a tormentor in hell.
2. A cruel, evil, or unmanageable person.
3. Something very insidious and harmful. (used as a modifier). [2]

And,
Kin, Noun
1. One’s family and relations.
2. Animals or plants that are related to a particular species or kind.
3. (adj. pred.) (Of a person) related. [3]
Thus, co-joining the terms as understood in the English language, we have to examine the source of the belief that gives rise to the term. In order to believe in demons we have to believe in some version of the whole good versus evil concept as related by organized religious doctrine or as presented in ancient theology. If we don’t believe in, say, God and Heaven, and The Christian Devil and Hell then how can we acknowledge the existence of “Demons” in the orthodox religious sense? If we can’t, by our own belief, acknowledge those things then how can we be expected to accept any claim of being “related”, psychologically or physiologically, to something that by our own standards of belief doesn’t exist? Therefore the so-called “Demon-kin” becomes a “role-player”, someone who reads too many Hell Boy comics** or, worse, someone who is suffering a psychological malady that requires treatment, perhaps an attention deficit disorder, a borderline personality disorder or, worse, a schizo-affective disorder.

My point is that if we, as an observer, don’t accept the existence of what is being claimed then that claim, to us, must be – logically speaking – a bogus claim and the person making such claim must therefore be a “poser” as defined by the generally accepted definition in the late Sanguinarius’ presentation of “Terminology and Lingo”.

img. source: www.adventuresinpoortaste.com

In the very same fashion people who are not part of what we regard as our sub-culture may well look at Psi-Vampires and say, “Ooh, lookee, a bunch of weirdo new-age stoners ohm-ing their way through their own personal fantasy…!

These same observers may well look at the Sanguinarian and say, “Ooh, yuk, look at those fetishist sicko’s drinking blood and pretending to be Dracula..!

The worst case scenario of all,

Vampire, Noun.
1. (In European folklore) a corpse supposed to leave its grave at night to drink the blood of the living by biting their necks with long pointed canine teeth.
2. A person who preys ruthlessly on others. [4]

To which our audience may well think, “WTF..!!?? These creepo’s think they’re some kind of supernatural monster that crawls out of their graves at night and chews on people? Let’s get ’em before they get us…!

So, in order to avoid embarrassment before the human race we devise our own set of definitions and word usage to “label” ourselves in a way that we of the sub-culture can understand and, what’s worse, we give “interviews” to media outlets outside of the sub-culture and try and justify who and what we are which serves to make us nothing but a laughing stock in the eyes of humanity. We help give rise to “academic” presentations that do nothing short of giving people something to laugh at as they nibble at their after dinner sweets. In short, we put ourselves on display as though we are some sort of real live freak show travelling the old west.

Even within our own so-called “community” there are terms that we employ, the terms that I have already mentioned, to denigrate certain people according to our prejudices.

Poser:
Someone pretending or claiming to be a vampire who is not, with the intent of deceiving others, by making false claims as to their powers, abilities, lifespan, etc.

Vampyre lifestyler / Vampyre (spelled with a “y”):
Someone who incorporates fictional vampire imagery and trappings into his or her personal life, often cultivating a “Vampyric” physical appearance

Wannabe:
A slang term, a contraction of the words “wants to be”. Derogatory term for someone who wants to become a vampire, usually with unrealistic expectations of what it would be like.

Role-player:
1.) Someone who engages in role playing games (RPGs).
2.) This is often used as a derogatory term for those who play Vampire: The Masquerade or similar vampire RPGs and/or who pretend to be a vampire in their free time when they are not. RPGers are also associated with posers and other fakes who dress the part and pretend to be something they are not. (See also “poser” and “wannabe”.)

Neovampyre / Neovampire:
A person who is not a natural vampire, but who is a student of vampyric/vampiric skills, philosophies and/or magicks; i.e., a person who (for lack of a better word) “converted” to vampyrism.

How can we decry “Posers”? After all, as Charles Caleb Colton observed, “Imitation is the sincerest of flattery.” Are we NOT flattered?
How can we decry Lifestyler’s? Aren’t they simply expressing the very thing we paint ourselves to be by using the term “Vampire” as a descriptor?
Equally, how can we decry the “Wannabe”? Again, imitation being the sincerest of flattery, should we not puff up with pride that there are people who desperately want to become like us?

Shouldn’t we help them become ‘posers’ or ‘lifestylers’ so we can feel even more flattered and so our egos can get a good old-fashioned stroking?

There are those out there, amongst our very number, who like to lay claim to whole cities as being, “My city”, even to the point of warning others of impending dire consequences should they show up in, “My city”. This is something that is firmly, and irrevocably entrenched, in Role-playing, it smacks of the “Princes of the cities” represented in the “Camarilla” of the famous White-Wolf Gaming Studio’s “Vampire: The Masquerade” – don’t want to burst any bubbles or rain on anyone’s parade but cities belong to the people of the city and the power of dominion over them is vested, by federal government statutes, in the civic authorities that are elected and appointed to manage said cities not to some mealy-mouthed ego-maniac who thinks they are some sort of earthly incarnation of Gilgamesh.[5]

In Conclusion:
We can’t lay claim to being “Vampires” in the world-wide accepted definition of the term so where does that leave us? It leaves us labelling ourselves. We can’t lay claim to deriving physiological benefits from ingesting blood or absorbing energy because we have NO PROOF.

We can’t lay claim to being more than human, extra-human or superhuman because, again, we have NO PROOF.

In point of fact we can’t lay claim to anything at all except the fact that we like to call ourselves after a mythological and folkloric entity that may, or may not, have existed in any form other than the imagination of superstitious and uneducated peasants, so, my question is why do we?

There is not a single one of us who can claim to speak for any other of us, who can claim to be in a position of authority over anyone except themselves and who can hold themselves up as being representative of the whole. There is not a single one of us who can even lay claim to being able to show ANYTHING except our own personal beliefs, or our own personal delusions as the case may be. It is this very lack of substance that makes our perceived “community” nothing more than a castle of cards teetering on a one legged table in a hurricane and THAT, dear reader, is THE TRUTH of the matter.

Every single one of you out there that is involved in the sub-culture of the modern vampire in ANY way whatsoever has a right to their beliefs, has a right to their perceptions and has a right to express themselves in any fashion they see fit in the observance of those beliefs…I’m pretty sure that’s along the same lines as the guarantee of religious exercise free of persecution that is enshrined in the constitutions of EVERY single free country in the world, no?
So, if you’re a poser, a lifestyler, a vampire, a wannabe, a neo-vamp or something else have the guts to be honest about it…

Ooh, Do what you wanna do, be what you wanna be yeah
It’s because I love you” ~ The Masters Apprentices 1971

It doesn’t matter because if you lie to US we’ll see through you and we’ll know YOU, however, if you lie to yourself then you are an honest to goodness loser and you’ll never be anything but that.

The Unity Question – Part 2 – Peace for our time

1 teamwork_0

Presented by

Tim and Lady Tania Tranquillitas

Upon returning from the Congress of Berlin in 1878, British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli stated, “I have returned from Germany with peace for our time.

“Peace for our time.” – Is such a thing possible?

Since 1878 the world has borne witness to 547 separate incidences that were severe enough to be termed “war” and, of that number, 53 conflicts are ongoing today. There is one more that should be added to that number, a conflict that has been going on since around the early nineties ~ perhaps ’93 or ’94. So far as we know it hasn’t claimed any lives but it has affected, probably, somewhere in the thousands of people.

It’s the ongoing conflict within our own sub-culture.

The word ‘war’ is heard fairly frequently around the place but what does it actually mean within the context of the modern real vampire society?

It can be as simple, and tactically limited, as the exchange of harsh messages and words in public internet forums, it can take on an offline form of harassment wherein threats are made and received by other means of electronic communications and it leads to bitter feuds, grudges and latent hostilities that influence both whole groups and individuals negatively.

img. source: www.genevapeaceconference.com

img. source: www.genevapeaceconference.com

What’s the answer?

The majority who live within the real vampire sub-culture will probably tell you that there is no answer and to look for one is foolish and futile but is that true? Is it a “carved in stone fact” that when an individual participates in the VC/OVC they lose, automatically, all sense of right and wrong, all sense of good conduct versus bad conduct, all sense of peace versus hostility?

If that’s true then we are all doomed, as has been noted, to live in this positively “Dantean” ‘inferno’ for as long as we can stand it… or until we go mad, whichever comes first.

If we are going to go looking for an answer to the problem, a possible solution to the situation, then we need to recognize that we are going to be facing “forces” that have a vested personal interest in seeing the chaos maintained, in seeing it maintained for their own amusement and entertainment… that’s the circle that needs be broken. The vast majority of the people who participate in the OVC do NOT want to have to put up with what is termed “Drama”, “B.S.” or “Asshattery” any more and, if so many want something, why can’t it come to be?

Imagining possibilities

Wherever we roam when we venture into the OVC we can usually find some level of conflict, it may be subtle, it may be volatile, it may be overt, and it may not be. It may be cloaked in disdain, disrespect or outright anger. Wherever we find it, it is almost instantly recognizable and almost instantly repulsive to the majority but it seems to be something that is accepted, by everyone, as being the “status quo” and therefore unshakeable. What could happen if we shake it anyway?

Could we bring a number of great minds, effective leaders and positive influences into alignment? Could we see a better “community” formed?

img. source: www.iranreview.org

img. source: www.iranreview.org

In human society, outside of our sub-culture, the main element that underpins society is the cooperation of the vast majority of the citizens of the society to enable the survival and improvement of their society for their collective benefit… is it so very hard to imagine doing it on a smaller scale within the modern vampire sub-culture? And, if it is so hard, why are we participating and keeping in touch with each other at all? Why are we bothering to call ourselves a “community”? Why keep up the pretense that we have anything at all?

This is not something that we can answer with a “poll” or a “survey”, this is something that can only be answered by each and every person who associates themselves with the modern vampire sub-culture in any way.

Some things already happen

In small ways there are a great many good things already happening within the sub-culture, for example, Shannon McCabe’s charity events on the West Coast, NOVA’s Homeless people’s meals events, Suscitatio Inc. studies on modern vampires and the sub-culture but these are far apart and relatively isolated events that achieve something on local levels.

Imagine, if a group of the majority of recognized leaders of our sub-culture were in a cooperative venture that was aimed both at reducing internal friction within this “community” and at enhancing the power to achieve such things on a wider scale than ever before, where that could; and would, take the modern vampire sub-culture’s profile; both in our own estimations and in the public eye.

We are, of course, fully expecting to hear that we “already have something” in place, the problem with whatever is already there is that it is not representative of the entire majority of the sub-culture and, if it is meant to be, why do we still have, see and experience the near disastrous consequences of “drama”, “B.S.” and “asshattery” at the levels we do every day?

Isn’t it time we stopped thinking up ways to “get one up on the other guy”, “make ourselves self-proclaimed emperors”, or other such things and started imagining, and making reality, things to benefit and enhance the sub-culture and our “community” as a cooperative venture?

img. source: www.jmu.edu

img. source: www.jmu.edu

Looking ahead

The whole thing, naturally, depends on individuals… individuals who are ready, willing and able to stop fighting, to stop playing “one-upmanship”, to stop “rattling sabers”, to stop the “conflict” within the sub-culture. Yes, it’s a big, big ask… yes, it’s going to be laughed at, it’s going to be the subject of derisive and sarcastic commentary, yes, it’s going to be the subject of debate both sensible and insensible… if not downright volatile but isn’t that how all great ideas get treated when they are first proposed? Yes, we might be painting bulls-eyes on ourselves for even daring to suggest such a thing but if we don’t try for it we’ll never know will we?

Obviously, the very first thing we need to do is invite a maximum number of well respected, influential and long term “leaders” to the party. When the concept was first proposed, in a private message chat some days back, it was broached like this;

Part of me wants to dust the OVC off my boots again. Another part wants to call [“X”] and [*Y*] and [*Z*] to [*town*] Stooge Slap them all, then sit us all down to write a new charter or something, over a few rounds in a bar of course.”

We’re not advocating, for one second, “stooge-slapping* anyone but we must confess the “few rounds in a bar* looks very inviting. No, the concept, to begin, needs enough interest to even begin to get its undercarriage rolling and with that in mind we would like to issue, formally, invitations to the following leaders and high profile public figures of the “Community of modern vampires” to think on this matter and then forward, to rvlmail@yahoo.com, their indication of support… or not.

img. source: ac4.ei.columbia.edu

img. source: ac4.ei.columbia.edu

We, on behalf of EVERYONE in the VC who are sick and tired of the “drama”, are calling on the following people to take up the challenge, consider the concept, weigh the pro’s and con’s, then think outside the square we all find ourselves confined in;

Lord Aramond Sebastian VanRahamdalph (Houston Vampire Court)
Belfazaar Ashantison (NOVA)
Berinvonn Daerthledd (Alaska)
Lady Briessa Malferic (AVOW California)
Corvis Nocturnum (Dark Moon Press)
King Logan South (Vampire Court of Austin)
Lady CG (Smoke & Mirrors- Canada)
Lady Onyx Ravyn (Matriarch of House RavenShadow)
Lady Raven (Lady Raven Productions, Oregon)
Lono Fructus Vespertilio (Psychicvampire.org aka The Psychic Vampire Resource and Support Pages)
Lord Chaz Howell (New Orleans)
Lord Shaolin Asura-Macphee (House Asura-MacPhee)
Madame X (Dark Nation’s, Iron Garden, House of the Dreaming)
Merticus Stevens (Atlanta Vampire Alliance)
Michelle Belanger (House Kheperu)
Nikluz Dragon d’Argent & Lady Perce Coeur (Manerium Lamiis)
Octarine Valur (House Valur and South African Vampyre Alliance)
Goddess Rosemary (High Priestess & Matriarch of the Temple House Sahjaza)
Lady Shannon McCabe (S&M Productions, Sacramento)
Lady SangSavvy (The Free Vampire)
Sebastian DeCavalier (Gateway of Tainted Souls)
Stefan Resurrectus (Clan Resurrectus)
Stefano Bordogni (Il Tempio Oscuro – Italy)
Thanatos Ventrue (Family and Knights of Ventrue)

In fourteen days we will publish the responses we receive and, just possibly, we may have the groundwork for an unprecedented, global initiative for peace within the sub-culture.

After all shouldn’t ANY “community” have a reasonable expectation of its leaders that it  be able to enjoy a measure of peaceful existence?

October 11, 2015

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
Firstly I would like to thank everyone who took the time, so far, to review this commentary. I think we can all agree that the subjects raised are such that we cannot ignore them and we cannot sweep them under the rug. It is, I believe, everyone’s responsibility to aid the fight against abuse in whatever form it might manifest and wherever it may be found. Silence helps no one.

Secondly; It has come to my attention that some of the graphic content in the editorial has had the effect of making some readers unable to read it fully, it has made them feel very uncomfortable and has brought back, for them, some extremely bad memories that they have fought long and hard to eliminate from their lives.

I sincerely apologise for any discomfort that this piece may have caused, it was never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable nor to recall past horrors in their lives.

To this end, please find herein a revised edition of the editorial with graphic content toned down. I think that the message, overall, needs to be shared in every corner and with every person possible to reinforce the need for us all to take heed and, if we can, help in the fight to eliminate the abuses that happen all around us every day.

Thank you for your feedback dear readers.
Deepest respects,
T

Revised editorial

In 2010, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States issued an alert after a 16-year-old girl, Paige Brewer, from Faribault, Minnesota ran away with the infamous Johnathan Sharkey. The alert described Brewer as an “endangered runaway”. Brewer’s mother eventually won a court order keeping Sharkey away from her daughter, who was taken into custody by police [1] and returned home.[2]

In 2013 Nelson Carrizo, who had been convicted of child pornography charges in 2012, lured an underage Palm Beach girl; who he had met online via VampireFreaks.com, to Miami for sex.[3]

Predators; predators of the worst kind and, unfortunately, a very real problem for the entire VC/OVC. I have been told that we, as a sub-culture, are a, “microcosm of the real world”, if that is true then we need to be equally as vigilant and equally as condemning should we discover such people amongst our own. If there is shame in having such people amongst our number it is not shame from having them but rather the shame that will follow if we DON’T do something about it when we find it.

abuse1

A great deal of work has been done on making our sub-culture presentable, if not exactly palatable, to the mundane “real world” but the truth is that if we, as a sub-culture, let ourselves be lax in “tending our own garden” then it WILL come back and bite us and, like it or not, ANYONE who goes under the name “Vampire” will, once more, be tarred and feathered with the same brush and bucket.

YOU need to ask yourself, dear reader, do you wish to be considered in the same light as convicted child-molesters? Do you want to considered, in the same light as murderers and rapists?

“My friends, this is much, it is a terrible task that we undertake, and there may be consequence to make the brave shudder. For if we fail in this our fight he must surely win, and then where end we? Life is nothings, I heed him not. But to fail here, is not mere life or death. It is that we become as him, that we henceforward become foul things of the night like him, without heart or conscience, preying on the bodies and the souls of those we love best.”
Bram Stoker’s Dracula [1897] edition, from Mina Harker’s Journal, 30th September.

I used this passage from the great novel by Stoker in an editorial in February of 2013, the subject of that piece was whether modern living vampires were actually predators or not. I was joined by several noted guests and, in general, regarding the question of association the following observations were made. As the character in the novel notes;
“But to fail here, is not mere life or death. It is that we become as him, that we henceforward become foul things of the night like him…”

no_bullying

In the editorial for RVL we offered up the following question;

“In your opinion, as long as we are using the term “vampire” to describe ourselves will we be able to shed the popular image as developed through fiction and entertainment?”

These were the responses from our guests;

ZN: Most likely that term will never be modified. I was initiated into Wicca in the early 80’s. That was a hard time to be practicing magic. I was harassed in public many times. People didn’t understand what we were and often thought we were worshiping Satan. Education became our best weapon. Nowadays most people, even Christian churches, know the truth about witches. I believe the same can happen for vampires. It is just going to take some time and initiative with education to get there.

JM: No. In the minds of the masses, you can’t separate one from the other. You can’t remove a word from its common perception, especially when that perception is ongoing and reenforced in fiction and pop culture.

VN: No. Look at how long it has taken most nations to shed the hypocrisy of the ideal of a superior race, or an inferior one. In many places the peoples and cultures still hold to such ideals and the bile that is the life of them. Ignorance is ever the seed and breathes of hatred and aggression. As long as we are known as “Vampire”, there will be the negative opinions and beliefs that go with it.

JL: I suspect that it will be difficult, particularly given that a vampire was traditionally an undead creature that had risen from the grave to suck the life force from living beings. The main stumbling block to comparing the modern “vampire” sub-culture with the folkloric vampire is the “undead” part. From what I understand, most individuals who associate with vampire movements or are sanguinarians, do not claim to have risen from the dead.

The “community” has weathered, over the last few years, a number of highly negative episodes, both internal and external and the fact remains is that the battle to justify ourselves is, in reality, no further advanced than it was prior to any of these occurrences. Now, again, with the allegations surfacing from New Orleans, the sub-culture looks set to be pitched headlong into another P.R. nightmare.
Responsibility as a Sub-Culture

There are many that would; and do, argue that as a sub-cultural identity we are permitted to express ourselves as freely and as openly as anyone else and that, in essence, may be true but when that “expressionism” transcends what is considered to be good, moral, ethical and legal responsibility then we open up, by our actions, ALL of our brothers, sisters, families, acquaintances and associates to guilt by association.

sex-pred-char

We have a duty to seek out, expose and expunge the elements of our own society that bring the sub-culture into disrepute through their heinous, self-serving and borderline criminal conduct and if we don’t do that then WE are just as guilty as the perpetrators are.

Anyone who has knowledge of activities that go beyond the norm of decent and civilized behaviour have a responsibility to make that information known and if we’re not going to follow that path then we become just as guilty of those selfsame transgressions. Let’s not, by our silence, by either implied or tacit approval that comes from such silence, condone or accept such activities.

Silence-Helps-No-One1
